The projects carried out in the department targeted at investigating the conditions of learning and instruction. This includes the abilities of learners and teachers as well as the features of the learning environment. With respect to learner and teacher abilities, the analysis of cross-curricular competencies of learners, such as self-regulated learning or problem-solving, and the analysis of general educational proficiency constitute the focal points of investigation. The empirical analysis of learning environments emphasizes the effective and facilitating design of computer-based simulations and multimedia learning environments.

The research approach that underlies research on learning and instruction reflects a strong empirical orientation. The methodological approaches used in learning and instruction research cover a broad range from instruments for large-scale assessments (e.g., PISA or lernstand) to computer-based analyses of specific processes. Correspondingly, the array of empirical research designs used for investigating learning and instruction processes ranges from large-scale assessments, correlative evaluations of educational interventions up to experiments on cognitive processes and structures.
